How to Deal with Play Resistance
Now that we have an understanding of what stops us from being playful, let’s explore how to overcome this resistance. Changing the mindset to view play as an investment in happier, more creative minds rather than a waste of time is crucial.
If you’re in a truly toxic environment, the first advice is to consider finding a new job, as organizations with severe issues might need foundational changes before they can embrace play. However, in more typical settings, here are five tips for tackling play resistance:
1. Role Model:
– If you’re a leader or influencer, you’re in a great position to model playful behavior and help shift mindsets. Lead by example, be as vulnerable and silly as you feel comfortable, and celebrate positive, playful behavior within the team.
2. Educate the Benefits:
– Share the benefits of play—such as increased profitability, productivity, and upskilling—with leaders and teams. Highlight the benefits that would resonate most with your colleagues to illustrate that play is beneficial and worthwhile.
3. Start with the Why:
– When introducing a game or playful activity, explain its purpose. For example, say, “Physical movements help us get more oxygen to the brain, enabling clearer thinking and better engagement. Let’s stand up and…”
4. Don’t Force People:
– Aim for the tipping point where enough people adopt playful behavior, making it acceptable and even desirable for others. This concept comes from social influence theory. Enlist a few play-friendly colleagues before a play activity to create this effect. Allow those who are hesitant to participate in other roles, such as timekeepers or observers.
5. Start Small
– Change doesn’t happen overnight. Begin with small steps, such as quick icebreakers at the start of meetings. Ask unusual but relevant questions related to the session topic. Inject a bit of humor into meetings to gradually build a playful culture.
Remember, breaking through play resistance is about shifting mindsets. It’s a journey, and every small step counts. Embrace the process, be patient, and celebrate each victory along the way.
