When & What

Sometimes group discussions wander away from the topic and to a place where the conversation is no longer relevant to everybody. People can find it uncomfortable to call this out and become quietly disengaged instead. This activity provides a light-hearted way of allowing everyone to call it out.

Everyone draws a jellyfish on a post-it. Throughout the session, anyone can raise the jellyfish card if they feel the conversation is drifting away — just like a jellyfish drifting away in the ocean. It is best run at the start of the session so that it can be used immediately.

Steps

  1. Ensure everyone has a marker pen and either post-its or an index card.
  2. Give them 1 minute (or less) to draw a jellyfish.
  3. Explain to them that they should keep the drawing throughout the session, and use it as a referee card when the conversations are drifting away.
